Where water would cause as much damage as the fire, a gaseous system is the usual answer. The choice of agent depends on whether people can be present and on what is being protected:

Each system needs more than cylinders and nozzles. The room must hold the gas long enough, which is proven by an integrity test; the release must be controlled by a panel with pre-discharge warning, hold and abort functions; and CO2 systems need lock-out and safe-entry procedures.
